AWARENESS OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR LEARNING AMONG UNIVERSITY STAFF A CASE OF A PRIVATE UNIVERSITY IN TANZANIA
Main Article Content
Abstract
Enrolment of students with visual impairments (SwVI) in Tanzanian higher education is rising, highlighting the need for inclusive teaching methods. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) offers a framework to address these needs. This qualitative case study at a private Tanzanian university explored UDL awareness among 12 participants, including lecturers, administrators, and SwVI, using interviews and observations. The study found varied understanding of UDL among staff, with some having a strong grasp and others limited awareness. Despite efforts by lecturers to integrate UDL principles such as using multimedia tools, providing accessible materials, and offering various assessment methods there is a clear need for enhanced training and resources. The study recommends increasing UDL awareness and training for staff, as well as better support for SwVI through university policies and assistive technologies.
